There
are 504 hydrants in the City of Gatlinburg. There is one
person responsible for inspecting all of these hydrants
annually. Inspections include flushing the hydrants,
checking tags, making sure there are no faulty seals, checking
that they are flow tested and color coded properly, that they are
oiled and greased, painted, no obstructions and that they are
visible. This person works jointly with the city's water
department. This person works an average of 5 days a week
during the spring and summer months and 2 days a week in the
winter months to service these hydrants. |

are color coded pertaining to the gallons per minute that they
pump out.
- Blue =
1,500+ gallons per minute
- Green =
1,000 to 1,500 gallons per minute
- Orange =
500 to 1,000 gallons per minute
- Red = less
than 500 gallons per minute
- Black =
"dead" hydrant, no water pressure
The majority
of the hydrants in the city are "blue top" hydrants
which means they flow water at a rate of 1500+
gallons per minute. |
