Welcome to the City of Gatlinburg
 Home :  Hydrants

There are 504 hydrants in the City of Gatlinburg.  There is one person responsible for inspecting all of these hydrants annually.  Inspections include flushing the hydrants, checking tags, making sure there are no faulty seals, checking that they are flow tested and color coded properly, that they are oiled and greased, painted, no obstructions and that they are visible.  This person works jointly with the city's water department.  This person works an average of 5 days a week during the spring and summer months and 2 days a week in the winter months to service these hydrants.

Gatlinburg's fire hydrants are color coded pertaining to the gallons per minute that they pump out.
  • Blue = 1,500+ gallons per minute
  • Green = 1,000 to 1,500 gallons per minute
  • Orange = 500 to 1,000 gallons per minute
  • Red = less than 500 gallons per minute
  • Black = "dead" hydrant, no water pressure

The majority of the hydrants in the city are "blue top" hydrants which means they flow water at a rate of 1500+ gallons per minute.
