Gatlinburg's Operations division is made up of 3 shifts that work a 24 hour period.  Paramedics/EMTs work 24 hours on and 48 hours off shift.  We have one Captain, Lieutenant and 9 Firefighters/EMTS or Firefighter/Paramedics per shift.  The shift captain is the supervisor of the shift and carries roles such as fire ground incident command and incident decision making as well as all scheduling and coordinating the daily events of the shift that is on duty.

The Lieutenant on shift's main responsibility is operations officer for the fire company.  He/She is the commanding officer on the fire engine, tanker or rescue vehicle.  If the captain on duty cannot come in for any reason then the lieutenant becomes acting captain.

The firefighter/EMT's or firefighter/paramedic's role on shift consists of, but are not limited to fighting structure fires, vehicle and brush fires, responding to, caring for and transporting patients up to their scope of practice in emergency medical situations, conducting technical search and rescue activities and responding to hazardous material emergencies.  They also fulfill any other requirements deemed necessary by the captain, lieutenant or the Fire Chief.

After more than 40 years of loyal service to the city of Gatlinburg, Captain James Shults has retired.  Congratulations, sir and Happy Retirement.
