These programs are offered at various times of the year.
Gatlinburg Emergency Call
System The Gatlinburg Police Department provides a service
to locate people by using a "Pyramid" type call list to the hotels, motels,
campgrounds and rental units in the City with the Agency being at the top of the
pyramid. This call list is used to locate visitors and is used to alert the business
community when thefts or frauds are being committed in the area.
Vehicle Unlocks The
Gatlinburg Police Department provides the service to the citizens and visitors of
unlocking vehicles for their convenience and assistance.
Walking Patrol Officers
are assigned to patrol the "Strip" which is used by local and close neighbors,
and youth for a place to cruise and hangout. Walking patrol officers will be
utilized to enforce local ordinances and state laws, and for crime prevention and crime
detection.
Bicycle Patrol The
Gatlinburg Police Department maintains and utilizes a mountain bike patrol unit.
This special patrol unit shall serve as an effective force in crime prevention, crime
detection and enforcement of local ordinances and State Laws. The bike patrol shall
also contribute to our community relations and educational programs.
Explorer Program
The Explorer Program is designed to educate and involve youth in police operations,
and to interest them in possible law enforcement functions. After this valuable
experience, they may choose to enter the law enforcement profession.
Crime
Prevention/Community Relations Our programs are designed
to inform, educate, and assist citizens in becoming more crime prevention and reduction
oriented. It targets all local media, community groups, and organizations, in
neighborhoods, businesses, and households in the city. Through our programs, we seek
to increase the community's understanding of police activities, increase citizen
confidence in the police department, and ensure a broader participation in city-wide crime
prevention and law enforcement efforts.
Community Policing Survey
For the purpose of compiling citizens survey information, the City was divided into
six geographical areas. This allows more specific information to be gathered in each
area of the City so that the police department can better determine the areas of needs
and/or problems.
Citizen Out-Of-Town Checks
The department provides the services of making periodic checks of citizen's residences
while they are out-of-town. This is a service that citizens use because it makes
them feel more comfortable about leaving their homes unattended.
D.A.R.E. The Police
D.A.R.E. Program is a valuable and legitimate tool in law enforcement. It is
effective in areas ranging from drug education to community policing and also in the
deterrence of juvenile drug use, abuse, and violence.
School Resource Officer
It is the desire of the Gatlinburg Police Department and in cooperation with the
Sevier County School Board to implement a S.R.O. (School Resource Officer) Program in the
Gatlinburg-Pittman High School and Pi Beta Phi Elementary School. With the
implementation of the program, we desire to provide a law enforcement presence and related
services to the public schools.
Police Kids Camp
Each year the police department sponsors a day camp for local youths. The camp
is held in late summer and lasts five days. Several officers are involved in the
camp as counselors. Typical activities include hiking, biking, swimming with
emphasis on safety and the community. Time is also spent touring City facilities
such as the Fire and Police Departments and the Community Center. Meeting several
officers on a face to face level is the major goal of the camp. |
