In order to fulfill its mission of providing quality police services to the citizens and visitors of Gatlinburg, the Gatlinburg Police Department actively seeks the most qualified candidates available to fill vacancies. The department is internationally accredited and offers a challenging career to those interested in law enforcement. This section details the minimum requirements for employment, job descriptions, salary and benefits, and the selection process.
The minimum requirements for the positions of Police Officer and Jailer/Dispatcher are:

* At least 18 years of age.
* U. S. citizen.
* High School graduate or equivalent.
* Pass a written examination.
* Pass a physical agility course.
* Not have been convicted of, plead guilty to, or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or any violation of federal or state laws, or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor, or controlled substances.
* Not released or discharged from the U. S. armed forces other than honorably.
* Demonstrate good moral character as determined by a background investigation.
* Pass a medical examination and drug screen by a licensed physician.
* Pass a psychological examination by a qualified professional in the psychiatric and psychological profession.
When there is a vacancy to be filled and a test scheduled, the written examination is given in the morning.   For those who pass the written examination, the physical agility test is given in the afternoon on the same day.
